Portions of Dean Forest Road from U.S. 80 to U.S. 17 were closed monday afternoon while emergency crews worked to clear a hazmat spill, but as of about 4:30 p.m., Dean Forest was back open, said Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman Gena Sullivan.
Crews placed absorbent powder along one lane of Dean Forest Road to soak up what was likely spilled deisel fuel, said Savannah Fire & Emergency Services spokesman Mark Keller. Savannah-Chatham police were on scene directing traffic, which was hampered until the spill was contained.
Sullivan said the spill stretched from U.S. 80 through Dean Forest Road to U.S. 17., and then along U.S. 17 until about Berwick BoulevardAs of about 4:30 p.m., she said, police had not identified the vehicle that spilled the fluid.
Keller said Southside Fire and EMS and Garden City Fire Rescue were on scene in their jurisdictions as well, aslo working to contain the spill. Sand was spread atop the leaked fluid and then swept from the roadway, Keller said. He said the fire department was initially called to the area at 12:35 p.m.
