A building on Old Augusta Road in Garden City was completely destroyed by a Thursday night fire.
Garden City and Port Wentworth firefighters worked for nearly 20 minutes to extinguish the flames after the report of a fully engulfed building just off Augusta Road came in about 8:30 p.m., said James Crosby, Garden City fire chief.
Crosby said the building that housed a car washing business was “a total loss;” the hair business next door was moderately damaged by the flames. The chief said he was uncertain late Thursday night what may have led to the blaze, but he added state fire investigators would take over the investigation on Friday.
“They’re definitely going to look into it,” Crosby said. “The business was instructed to shut down about 4 p.m. (Thursday) because of (Environmental Protection Agency) violations.”
