A 28-year-old 3rd Infantry Division soldier on his second combat deployment was killed in Afghanistan Thursday, the Department of Defense announced Friday evening.
Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, of Chester, Va., died from injuries sustained when his unit was attacked with small arms fire while on mounted patrol in Khogyani District, Nangarhar Province.
He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.
Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said Wittman was an infantryman who joined the Army in Oct. 2008 and arrived at Fort Stewart in February 2012. He had received awards during his career including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.
