Day of Service
11 a.m.-2 p.m. Jan. 19. First Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church , 1023 West 44th St. Many Savannah residents are expected to celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday  by making the Annual Day of Service a day on, not a day off  by volunteering to feed the hungry and the homeless on Saturday, Jan. 19 beginning at  11 a.m. First Nazareth  has planned a day of service that will leverage the strength of local citizens to help tackle local problems and advance King’s dream of opportunity for all.



Coast Guard Academy Chorale Concert
7 p.m. Jan. 19. Independent Presbyterian Church, 207 Bull St. The Coast Guard Academy Chorale group will present a variety of music, featuring close harmony renditions of patriotic selections, sea chanteys and show tunes. Sponsored by Christ Church Anglican, the concert is free and open to the public. The group travels extensively throughout the United States to perform for both public and official functions. Disney World in Florida, the Rose Bowl Parade in California, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City and the 2005 Super Bowl have all hosted the group in the past. ‘Willy Wonka’
Jan. 18-20; Jan. 25-27; Feb. 1-3. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 2160 E. Victory Drive. Crossroads Shopping Center. Who can make the sun rise, sprinkle it with dew, cover it in chocolate and a miracle or two? The Candy Man can and will for three weekends at The Savannah Children’s Theatre. “Willy Wonka,” a magically delicious mainstage production, features adult and youth performers who bring to life this popular musical, complete with a live show orchestra. SCCPSS presents ‘Getting Ready For College’
9 a.m.-noon. Jan. 19. School of Liberal Studies at Savannah High, 400 Pennsylvania Ave. The Savannah-Chatham County public school system invites all parents and students to a workshop titled “Getting Ready for College.” The event is free and open to high school students and parents. The event will include a series of 25-minute sessions packed with valuable information that will help students make a successful transition into college. Topics will include financial aid, college admissions, financial aid for athletes, building a competitive transcript, understanding the PSAT and online ACT/SAT support. Mountainfilm on Tour: Coffee and Conversation
9:30 a.m. Jan. 19. The Sentient Bean, 13 E. Park Ave. The Mountainfilm festival will host a coffee and conversation event Jan. 19. The panel includes Kate Greenburg, Right to Play ambassador; Joey Cheek, Olympic medalist representing Right to Play/Team Darfur; Beth & George Gage, filmmakers of “Bidder 70” and other award-winning documentary films.

Mountainfilm on Tour: Community Bike Ride
11 a.m. Jan. 19. The Mountainfilm festival will host a community bike ride Jan. 19. The ride starts and ends at the south end of Forsyth Park, on Park Avenue at Bull Street, and is organized by Savannah Bicycle Campaign.

Mountainfilm on Tour: Family-friendly Matinee Films
2 p.m. Jan. 19. Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St. The Mountainfilm festival will screen family-friendly films Jan. 19. Films include “Outside the Box,” “Living Tiny,” “Julio Solis” and more. The cost is $5.

Mountainfilm festival final night
7 p.m. Jan. 19. Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St. The final night of the  Mountainfilm festival will feature “Eco Ninja,” “The Man Who Lived on His Bike” and more. There will be a Q&A session after films that will feature special guests Beth and George Gage of Gage and Gage Productions, filmmakers of “Bidder 70” and other award-winning documentary films. Cost is $10 for adults and $8 for students, military and seniors.

Habitat Savannah announces dates for applications
Habitat for Humanity Savannah has opened its 2013 Habitat Homeownership application process. Eligibility is limited to Chatham County residents who have completed and submitted applications before the 5 p.m. Jan. 21 deadline. Applications submitted after that deadline will not be considered. Applications are available online at www.habitatsavannah.org/apply.html or at the organization’s office at 1106 E. 70th St. A receptacle containing applications is placed on the front porch during the pre-application acceptance period, through Jan. 21.

Rabies clinic
9 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 19. Animal Control Center at 7211 Sallie Mood Drive. The Animal Control Unit of the Savannah-Chatham police department will host its first rabies clinic of 2013 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 19. Inoculations will be available for $6 each. Animal Control officers will be on hand to help handle the cats and dogs at the Animal Control Center. Also, this clinic will offer microchipping for $20 and Chatham County Tag Registration will be on hand for animal tag/ pet registration. During the clinic, the center will also be open for pet adoption. All dogs brought to the clinic must be leashed or kenneled and those prone to biting must be muzzled. Cats must be brought in carriers.

Savannah Low Country Home & Garden Show
10 a.m.-7 p.m. Jan. 19; 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 20. Savannah International Trade & Convention Center, 1 International Drive. Find thousands of square feet of landscapes, gardens and celebrity and gardening seminars at the 13th annual Savannah Low Country Living Home & Garden Show at the Savannah International Trade & Convention Center. Highlights of this year’s show include home improvement alley; booths featuring the latest trends in kitchen, bath and interiors; pools, spas and hardscapes and more. Tickets are $7 for adults; $5 for seniors 65 and older and retired military; and free for active-duty military and children younger than 16.
