A U.S. Coast Guard boat crew from Station Tybee Island medically evacuated a 56-year-old man from a jon boat in the Ossabaw Sound on Sunday after he started experiencing chest pains, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Jessica Potter.

A 911-relay call from Chatham County alerted Coast Guard Sector Charleston of the man’s condition at 3:36 p.m., Potter said. After consulting with a Coast Guard flight surgeon, she said, a medical evacuation was determined necessary.

A boat crew from Station Tybee Island launched aboard a 45-foot response boat and arrived at the jon boat at 4:25 p.m., Potter said.
Coast Guard crews safely transferred to man to the response boat and took him ashore to await emergency medical technicians.

His condition as of about 5 p.m. Sunday was unknown, Potter said.
