A pursuit that began in Liberty County ended on the Armstrong Atlantic State University campus late Sunday afternoon after a crash that sent two officers to the hospital.

Savannah-Chatham police spokesman Julian Miller said Liberty County deputies began pursuing a white pickup in that county, and eventually both the Midway and Richmond Hill police departments joined in. Richmond Hill police dropped out once the truck exited their jurisdiction, Miller said, but Liberty County deputies and Midway police continued pursuit.

The truck, which Miller said was traveling at a high rate of speed, struck another vehicle at Ga. 204 and U.S. 17 and ran red lights down Ga. 204 into Savannah. Near Science Drive, the driver of the truck attempted to pass a Savannah-Chatham police patrol car on the right that was pulling out of Armstrong, striking the car and spinning it.

The driver of the truck then lost control and the truck started flipping over, eventually landing upside down off Abercorn Street on Armstrong's campus.

The two male occupants of the truck then exited the vehicle and ran through campus and into a neighborhood behind the school, where they were apprehended by Chatham County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Savannah-Chatham police and Liberty County Sheriff’s deputies, Miller said.

“We had two officers that were in the patrol car and they have been transported for treatment,” Miller said. “We don’t know the extent of their injuries. ... They don’t appear to be life-threatening, but we don’t know that at this point. We’re still trying to check that out.”

Miller said the Savannah-Chatham officers in the car that was struck were on patrol and were not involved in the pursuit. Police did not have immediate information about the condition of the people who were in the car that was struck by the truck at Ga. 204 and U.S. 17.

Officers from multiple agencies remained at Armstrong after sunset Sunday working the scene. Police on Sunday evening had not released the names of the two men who were arrested or indicated what charges they face or why the pursuit began.
