ATLANTA — The chief jailer at Fulton County's lockup says that some female inmates will have to sleep on the floor after county commissioners voted to cut funds used to rent bed space in other jails.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/VkB8DU) that the commission on Wednesday voted 5-1 to end the funding. Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves said the money saved will go toward alternative sentencing and programs to reduce the number of repeat offenders, hopefully lowering the jail's population.
However, Fulton County Chief Jailer Mark Adger says the move will eliminate flexibility in separating women from men and keeping gang members apart. He said that means some female inmates will have to sleep on the floor, and the same will soon be true for male inmates.
