A late afternoon fire displaced five people from their southside Savannah homes Wednesday and injured two firefighters.
Savannah Fire & Emergency Services personnel responded to the report of smoke coming from a downstairs residence at the Spanish Villa Apartments in the 10600 block of Abercorn Street about 11 a.m., said Mark Keller, Savannah Fire spokesman. There firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from an apartment.
Most of the blaze was initially located in the kitchen of the apartment where investigators determined it had likely started, Keller said. But while firefighters were searching the building, a flash over engulfed the living room area of the apartment in flames. Additional firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but the apartment sustained major damage.
Two Savannah Fire firefighters received injuries described as minor, Keller said. Both are being treated at a St. Joseph’s/Candler medical facility and were expected to be released by the end of the day Wednesday.
The three residents — two adults and a child — were not home during the blaze. Two adults who live in an adjoining apartment were also displaced as a result of water damage and discontinued electrical power.
Keller said the American Red Cross is assisting all of the displaced residents.
