A Guyton bicyclist who was struck by a hit-and-run driver in December in Effingham County has died.
Mitchell Johnson, 47, was riding on Hodgeville Road near Forest Haven Road on Dec. 9 when he was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle, according to Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman David Ehsanipoor.
A passerby spotted the wrecked bicycle and Johnson lying on the side of the road. He was taken to Memorial University Medical Center with serious injuries.
Ehsanipoor said Johnson died on Feb. 1 from traumatic injuries caused by the crash. The sheriff’s office was just notified of the death.
Authorities have identified a person of interest as the driver, but no charges have been filed, Ehsanipoor said. The Georgia State Patrol’s specialized collision and reconstruction team is investigating the accident.
