With construction set to begin Feb. 25 at the Savannah-Chatham Animal Control Center, the department is hoping many of the animals in the shelter will be adopted.
The construction, renovations to the building’s dog kennels ordered by the Department of Agriculture, will reduce kennel space by about one-third, said Julian Miller, police spokesman.
There are currently 102 dogs and puppies in the 116 dog kennels as well as 70 cats and kittens, Miller said. The public can view and adopt aniamls between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. daily at the center located at 7211 Sallie Mood Dr. Licensed Rescue groups will have access to the kennels beginning at noon each day.
Animal Control is required to hold animals at least five days before euthanizing them, but it regularly keeps them as long as possible with the hope they’ll be adopted, Miller said. The staff hopes to avoid euthanization as often as possible.
Animal Control staff has reached out to veterinarians and pet stores in the area with posters to encourage adoption. Anyone with questions can call the center at 912-351-6750.
