HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Letters and packages going to and from the lower South Carolina coast are now being processed by the U.S. Postal Service in Charleston.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports Beaufort and Jasper county mail used to be handled in nearby Savannah, Ga. But the Postal Service has closed its Savannah processing center.
The change will not affect costs or delivery times. But letters will now be stamped that they were processed in Charleston.
The Postal Service is closing 140 processing centers nationwide this month to save money and plans to close almost 90 more next year.
The change will save $1.2 billion annually and reduce the postal workforce by 13,000. The 133 employees in Savannah either retired or took other Postal Service jobs.
