STATESBORO — Emergency responders in southeast Georgia say a farmer and a rescue worker have been freed from a grain silo full of soybeans.

Ted Wynn, Bulloch County public safety director, says farmer David Averitt was trapped in the 40-foot tall silo for hours before rescue crews began cutting 6 inch holes around the structure to try relieving the pressure by emptying some of the soybeans.

Wynn says Bulloch Country rescue worker Daryl Colson got too close to one of the holes and was buried up to his chest in soybeans.

Both men were freed around 7:30 p.m. and were taken to a hospital in Savannah for evaluations.

Authorities are unsure of how Averitt — a retired state trooper — initially became trapped in the silo
