Work is under way in downtown Savannah to make improvements to two of the city's historic squares.

In Reynolds Square, known for its centerpiece monument to Methodist founder John Wesley, crews have begun removing sections on concrete walkways that have been damaged by tree roots. They will be replaced by new brick walkways that make room for the roots. New benches are also being installed.

Work is also being done in Lafayette Square near the downtown Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. City officials say Georgia Power is replacing older electrical conductors in the square.

Projects in both squares are expected to be completed next month.

With their marble monuments and ancient oaks, Savannah's 22 squares are often called the city's "crown jewels." The first squares were plotted in 1733.
