The Georgia Supreme Court today upheld the conviction and life prison sentence for a Savannah man in the 2006 shooting death of Johnson High School sophomore Ramone “Monie” Bowers.

Marquis Young, 21, was convicted by a Chatham County Superior Court jury April 1, 2010, on murder and related charges and sentenced to life plus five years in prison.

Bowers, 18, was shot 11 times with a .40-caliber pistol Sept. 25, 2006, in the 300 block of East Duffy Street.

Trial evidence showed Young admitted to a jailhouse informant that he shot the victim because Bowers had shot at him a few days before.

Justice Keith Blackwell, writing for the unanimous court, ruled that Young’s attack on testimony from the jailhouse informant failed because the evidence was sufficient to authorize the jury to find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Blackwell also rejected Young’s attacks on his attorney for ineffective assistance of counsel.
