Celebrity chefs Jamie and Bobby Deen stopped by Back in the Day Bakery, 2403 Bull St., on Friday morning to film for an upcoming Food Network holiday special.
Bakery owner Cheryl Day said the Deens chose to feature Back in the Day’s bread and cornbread in recipes for the show, produced by New York-based Follow Productions, that will air sometime around Nov. 22.
“The premise was they were preparing a special meal, but that’s all I can tell you,” Day said. “They were making Thanksgiving dinner.”
Back in the Day received extensive television exposure earlier this year when Cheryl and her husband Griffith Day appeared on QVC after publication of their first cookbook and sold out their available copies.
The Days opened Back in the Day Bakery in August 2002 and began celebrating those 10 years on March 6 when they released their cookbook, “The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook,” which contains many customer favorites and features more than 100 tried-and-true recipes from “the best little bakery in the South.”
It highlights the history of when the Days opened the bakery, as well as family stories about developing their love of baked goods as children. It also provides tips to the home baker and tidbits of history on each recipe.
“People always tell us how much they enjoy the bakery. That clarifies who we are,” Griff said in an earlier interview. “The cookbook harkens back to a day when it was all about home baking before there were over-processed foods.”
“We want to share scratch baking and keep that alive. The cookbook will be another avenue to reach people,” Cheryl said.
