A Bryan County sheriff's deputy, Robert Crapse, was killed Friday morning in an accident with a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 95, according to Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith.

Crapse's cruiser collided head on with a Toyota being driven by Patricia Ann Collins of Richmond Hill around 2 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95.

“He was driving north on the Interstate, the other vehicle was driving south in the northbound lane,” Smith said.

Smith said Crapse, who resided in Ellabell, had been working traffic control and was headed back to the north end of the county when the accident occurred.

According to Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police the crash happened near mile marker 97 which is between the I-16 and Highway 204 exits.

Crapse, a K9 officer, had his dog Seppe with him at the time of the accident.

“His dog appears to be alright, just a scratch or two but we are going to take him to get checked out,” Smith said.

Smith described Crapse as a good officer.

“He started working for us in the jail right out of high school. I sent him to school and he became a deputy,” the Sheriff said. “It is a terrible, tragic thing. He was a fine deputy.”

Crapse leaves behind a wife and three children.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident Smith said.
