‘Diabetes Exposed’

The Coastal Georgia Center for Continuing Education, 305 Fahm St. American Diabetes Association presents “Diabetes Exposed” on Feb. 23 at The Coastal Georgia Center for Continuing Education. This event is for all people affected by diabetes. Doors will open at 8 a.m., with three sessions and a keynote presentation by Brittany Freeman, southeast advocacy director for the American Diabetes Association, who will be talking about diabetes and the Affordable Care Act. Gullah-Geechee program at Fort Pulaski
2 p.m. Feb. 23. Fort Pulaski National Monument, U.S. 80. Fort Pulaski National Monument will sponsor a special cultural presentation Feb. 24. Geechee Kunda will provide a one-hour presentation reflecting the culture, history and heritage of the Gullah people of coastal Georgia. Featuring a musical opening by the Bokai Steel Drum Rhythm Band, the program will include a historical presentation by the African Spirit of Dayclean and an interactive, comedic performance with ista Bithia. There will also be a display of Savannah African ironworks with blacksmith Gilbert Walker.
Savannah Mall celebrates Black History Month
10 a.m.-9 p.m. Feb. 23 and noon-6 p.m. Feb. 24. Savannah Mall. Come see the multicultural art that evolves around dance, music, painting, sculpting, sewing and many other mediums created by local African-American artisans who express passion for life. The event will be Feb. 23-24.
Student Fashion Show
7 p.m. Feb. 23. South Effingham High School, Guyton. South Effingham High School National Art Honor Society will host its seventh annual Student Fashion Show on Feb. 23. This year’s event is titled “Handmade Couture” and will feature garments designed and created by SEHS students. The show is a juried runway show and will be judged by a panel of artists, educators and models from Savannah and the surrounding area.
Keep Tybee Tidy
10 a.m. Feb. 23. Tybee Pier and Pavilion. Keeping litter out of waterways is important to the health of marine life, humans and our environment. One way to be part of the solution is to volunteer during litter cleanups. Savannah State University students will be hosting Spring Beach Sweeps on Feb. 23, in partnership with Tybee Beautification Association and the City of Tybee Island. DeRenne Middle School celebrates Black History Month
3 p.m. Feb. 23. DeRenne Middle School, 1009 Clinch St. DeRenne Middle School is celebrating Black History Month with a fundraiser talent show Feb. 23. This community-wide event will serve as a fundraiser for the AVID students at DeRenne Middle School and will be filled with entertainment highlighting famous African-Americans. Francophone Film Festival

Ogeechee Theatre, Armstrong Student Union, 11935 Abercorn St. Armstrong Atlantic State University announces its fifth annual Francophone Film Festival, a four-day festival devoted to French cinema of many genres. “Les Contes de la Nuit” will be shown at 6 p.m. and “Une Vie de Chat” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Feb. 23.

‘The Shadow Man’ Book Trailer Competition 2013
Through March 11. Savannah author and physician Dr. Mark Murphy is announcing a web-based book trailer competition for his thriller, “The Shadow Man.” Trailers (1-3 minutes in length) should take advantage of the Savannah setting while incorporating aspects of the city that are present in the story. The iconic cover shot of the Forsyth Park Fountain at night must be incorporated into each video as well as links to the author’s website and Facebook page. ‘Potable Gold: Savannah’s Madeira Tradition’
5:30 p.m. Feb. 23. The Davenport House. Experience the historic atmosphere of the Davenport House while learning about and tasting a unique and flavorful wine. Patrons are oriented to the long and rich tradition of Madeira (wine) as it relates to the history of Savannah and then they will participate in a Madeira party. During the experience, they see the historic house at dusk, including spaces usually off-limits to museum guests. Admission is $20 and guests must be 21 years of age. Pirate Preview Open House

World Spay Day
