Chatham County Commissioners postponed a vote on a convention center hotel agreement on Friday after about an hour discussing the issue.

Commissioner Tony Center said he wanted the matter delayed until March 22 to give the county attorney time to clarify some of the document's language.

Center said he wanted to make sure the agreement, which is suppossed to give time to the developer to secure financing, is non-binding.

Consideration of the agreement comes after a new commission began its term in January, following the previous commission's 180-day extension in October of a memorandum of understanding with Hutchinson Hotel Holdings for a public-private partnership to develop a 500-room hotel as part of the expansion of the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center.

As part of the extension, the commission agreed to fund the economic study and feasability review. For the project to move forward, the non-binding development agreement would have to be approved.

The agreement would enable the county to continue reviewing any potential risks in the proposal, which would include the county issuing up to $50 million in bonds for the hotel's conference  center and parking garage, which Chatham would lease to the private developer.
