MACON — Tim Quarterman scored 21 points to lead Johnson-Savannah to a 61-51 win over its city rival Savannah Saturday in the GHSA Class AAA boys state championship game.
Greg Mortimer added 13 points for the Atom Smashers, who won their first state title since 1992 and the third in school history.
Jermaine Williams scored 18 points to lead Savannah, which lost in a state championship game for the second straight year.
Johnson (25-6) shot 57.9 percent (11 for 19) from the floor in the first half to take a nine-point halftime lead. The Blue Jackets (28-4) never got closer than eight the rest of the game.
The Atom Smashers made 25 of 31 free throw attempts, going 17 of 22 in the second half.
Johnson coach Utaff Gordon won the state title in his first year as a head coach after serving on Savannah coach Tim Jordan’s staff last year.
