Georgia Southern has called a press conference for Tuesday morning at 9:30 at the Bishop Field House, most likely to announce the firing its fourth-year men's basketball coach Charlton Young.
An email sent from the school Monday night said athletics director Tom Kleinlein would address the media to “discuss a change in leadership of its men’s basketball program.”
Kleinlein would not confirm nor deny Young would be fired after being reached on phone Monday night.
Young did not return phone calls on Monday.
Young has compiled a 43-84 mark over four years, including a 14-19 record this season. GSU advanced to the second round of the Southern Conference basketball tournament this season before falling to Davidson 84-59 on Saturday.
Young took over a troubled program in 2009 that eventually lost scholarships and was placed on NCAA probation after the governing body deemed the school guilty of academic violations.
Young was 9-23 his first year (2009-10 season), then 5-27 the next year.
Southern made quantum leaps last season going 15-15, but lost a key recruit in the offseason and had a returning starter academically ineligible before the 2012-13 season tipped off.
At times, the Eagles showed signs of improvement this season, knocking off ACC member Virginia Tech (the school’s first win over an ACC school) and downing SoCon toughies Davidson and the College of Charleston.
But Georgia Southern was mostly inconsistent, falling to The Citadel, a bottom feeder in the league, during the same week the Eagles beat Davidson and the College of Charleston.
Young played basketball for Georgia Southern and was the starting point guard when the Eagles last went to the NCAA tournament in 1992.
