The Tybee City Council was told today that it will have to transfer about $820,000 from the general fund to correct accounting errors stemming back to 2008.
The transfer should leave about $3.5 million in the city's general fund, said Steven Garber, a private accountant hired to help the city prepare its audit for last fiscal year.Garber answered council questions regarding the accounting errors for almost two hours this afternoon during a special called meeting.
How much of the remaining general fund can be used for city operations is still in question, since the council intends to reserve some for beach renourishment and greenspace. The amount of unreserved funds is a concern because city officials want to have enough to cover the cost of operations in case of an emergency.
Mayor Jason Buelterman said greenspace and beach renourishment funds could always be used, if the city had no alternative. The council is expected to vote on the transfers at its regular meeting, which starts at 6:30 p.m.
