Holding a half-eaten churro in her hand, 6-year-old Marta Morales stared intently as brightly dressed dancers whirled across the stage in the middle of River Street’s Rousakis Plaza.

“They’re so pretty,” she said to her father, George, without taking her eyes of the traditional Mexican dancers from the troupe Tradicion Latina — one of more than a dozen acts to perform Saturday during the seventh annual Fiesta Latina.

The event that in addition to the dancers features latin music, food, vendors and organizations is organized by the Savannah Latin American Services Organization and the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs.

LASO is a nonprofit organization that works to promote Latin culture in Savannah.

The festival, said Franyel Zelaya, the president of LASO’s board, is an excellent “opportunity to share the diversity of the Latino Culture” with the community.

That opportunity, George Morales said, is exactly why he brought his young daughter to the event.

“You don’t always get the exposure for the kids to (Latino) culture,” he said. “This is kind of a fun way to do that.

“The food and the music is good, but she just really loves to watch the dancers perform.”
