City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 500 East River Street on Monday. The spill was the result of sewage discharge caused by a force main failure on River Street, according to the city.
The total volume discharged was 12 gallons, which means the spill is classified as a minor spill under state Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 12:06 p.m., and the spill was corrected at 12:30 p.m.
Sewer Conveyance staff contained the sewage flow to the storm-water catch basin and continued vacuuming the flow seeping through the pavement. Staff continued by cutting the asphalt and sidewalk out to repair the crack in the force main. Lime will be spread over the affected area. Planning will begin to focus on replacement of this force main in the near future.
All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
