The Back River and Talmadge Memorial bridges were shut down for hours Monday after a midmorning three-vehicle wreck sent three people to the hospital.
Ross Glatzer, 66, and Amiee Corley, 21, both of Bluffton, S.C., were airlifted by helicopter to Memorial University Medical Center after the wreck, said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham police spokesman.
Savannah firefighters used the Jaws of Life and other rescue tools to extricate Glatzer from a Nissan SUV, which overturned as a result of impact, and Corley from a Lexus sedan, said Mark Keller, Savannah Fire & Emergency Services spokesman.
Glatzer was listed in serious condition Monday afternoon, and Corley was treated for injuries to her leg, Miller said.
A third driver, Faye Wiggs, 62, of Chesapeake, Va., was taken by ambulance to Memorial where she was treated and released, Miller said.
The accident occurred about 10 a.m. on the two-lane bridge that crosses the Back River between Hutchinson Island and South Carolina.
The continuing investigation of Monday’s three-vehicle crash on the Back River Bridge has corrected which car crossed the center line.
Officers of the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department discovered in follow-up interviews and investigation that the beige Lexus sedan driven by Corley crossed the center line.
Glatzer, originally reported to have been traveling south on the bridge in an SUV that crossed the line, actually was northbound behind a white Kia driven by Wiggs. The Kia was sideswiped by the southbound Lexus, which then collided with the SUV.
The investigation is continuing.
At least two other collisions took place on the bridge involving vehicles that did not stop in time, Miller said. Several people were treated by Southside EMS.
MAIT is continuing to investigate.
