A Savannah man on Wednesday was indicted on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals for using a pistol to shoot and kill a dog that was a mixed-breed partial pit bull.

James Harris Wrenn, 71, shot the female dog known as “Baby Girl” in the head and face on June 4, 2012, the Chatham County grand jury determined.

The same panel also indicted Wrenn for shooting the animal in the right leg, “rendering a part of such animal useless” on the same day.

The four-count re-indictment obtained by Assistant District Attorney Sneh Patel included a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon based on an Aug. 1, 1989, conviction in Superior Court on a charge of theft by deception.

The indictment also included a new charge of false swearing, charging that Wrenn, under oath on a gun permit application, denied being convicted of a felony.
