A Savannah family escaped a fire that burned their home Thursday night, the Red Cross reported.
The Red Cross said a 38-year-old mother and her three sons were not at the house at 1149 Darwin St. when the fire started sometime before 9 p.m. She had left the children with other family members while she sought treatment for herself at the Memorial University Medical Center emergency room, authorities said.
When her 18-year-old son and his grandmother arrived at the home they discovered the house was on fire and called 911. The son then called his mother at the hospital and she arrived home to find Savannah Fire Department had extinguished the blaze and was still on the scene, the Red Cross said.
Most of the family’s belongings were damaged or destroyed in the blaze and they have no insurance, authorities said. They said the fire did major damage to the wood frame/vinyl three bedroom home.
Red Cross Disaster Team members provided the family with funds for temporary shelter and food. The team said the home was being rented and cannot be lived in because of the amount of damage caused by the fire.
