FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) — Army soldiers from Fort Stewart are returning home to Georgia from their first deployment to Afghanistan.
About 100 soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment were scheduled to arrive home Wednesday after a 9-month tour.
This year marked the first tours in Afghanistan for ground troops from Fort Stewart's 3rd Infantry Division, which served in Iraq four times before the U.S. withdrawal last year.
Overall, about 2,200 Fort Stewart soldiers have deployed to Afghanistan this year including the division's top general and his command staff. The unit that's beginning to come home accounts for about 700 of those soldiers.
While overseas, the returning battalion was tasked with providing stability and security in remote Afghan villages.
