SAVANNAH, Ga. — A southeast Georgia sheriff says he wants residents to have a safe place to dispose of old prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Chatham County Sheriff Al St. Lawrence and his deputies planned Monday to install a drug drop box at the county courthouse in Savannah. Authorities say having the big, white box in the lobby will give residents a way to get rid of outdated and unwanted drugs in their homes without worrying about them falling into wrong hands or possibly poisoning someone.

The drop box was provided to the sheriff's office by the Council on Alcohol and Drugs.

Officials say the box is not to be used for disposal of needles, biohazard materials or illegal drugs.
