Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson and more than 75 others were on hand this morning for the official grand opening of the Reed House for improving the lives of people challenged by serious mental illness.
J.E. “Jerry” Wilson, board president, said the clubhouse model was the first such program in the state designed to “improved the quality of life for those with mental health issues.”
The program, housed in a building behind the Grace United Methodist Church on Waters Avenue, is a dream turned into reality, Wilson told the group.
Jackson said the Reed House will be a place for people with mental health issues to go and learn skills, calling it “good for Savannah.”
The Reed House is named for Esther Reed who has raised money over the years to make the idea come true.
The clubhouse model is to provide job and like skills to help those with serious mental illness recover skills and jobs through training.
