A 29-year-old Savannah man was found guilty of murder and related charges in the 2008 shooting death of his step father.

A jury Friday found Farren Scott Johnson guilty of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in the incident that occurred May 28, 2008, said Daniel Baxter, Chatham County District Attorney’s Office spokesman.

In the trial assistant district attorney Frank Pennington explained to the jury on that day Johnson and 43-year-old Clarence Alston were watching television when without being provoked, Johnson shot Alston four times in the head with a .38 caliber firearm, Baxter said.

Johnson then walked into the front yard and awaited his mother’s arrival from work. Johnson explained the incidnet to his mother, who called 911 about 8:40 p.m., Baxter said.

Responding police officers took Johnson into custody.

Johnson’s attorneys claimed their client was not guilty by reason of insanity, but the jury returned a verdict of guilty, but mentally ill.

Baxter said Johnson will serve his sentence — to be handed down by Superior Court Judge Michael Karpf at a later date — in prison where he will receive mental health treatment.
