Savannah-Chatham public schools Superintendent Thomas Lockamy is suggesting a 1 percent millage rate increase to make up for state budget reductions.
The increase, if approved by the school board, would raise school property taxes by $85 for most homeowners and would allow teachers and all school employees to receive a step increase and cost of living increase for the first time in five years.
Some board members suggested athletic programs and transportation services should be cut instead of a millage rate increase.
In separate action: The schools board has approved a one-year, $3.5 million contract for Kelly Services to manage and hire substitute employees for the public schools.
