One DeRenne Middle School student is in custody and another was taken to the hospital after an assault Monday morning.

A female student was taken to Memorial University Medical Center with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries after being assaulted by another student wielding what appeared to be a kitchen knife, said Kurt Hetager, Savannah-Chatham public schools spokesman.

The victim suffered injuries to her head, back right shoulder and right arm, Hetager said.

The 13-year-old female student who allegedly committed the assault was taken to Chatham County’s juvenile detention center and charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon on school property and disrupting public school, Hetager said.

The incident occurred at 7:30 a.m. in a hallway at the school, he said. Classes at DeRenne Middle start at 7:45 a.m.

Hetager said campus police are still looking into the assault and no further information was immediately available.
