A 13-year-old female DeRenne Middle School student today was ordered detained pending a May 13 hearing on charges stemming from a knife attack at the school Monday.
Chatham County Juvenile Court Judge Pro Tem Richard Metz made the ruling following a brief detention hearing in which reporters were barred on an objection by the defense.
Metz said that no formal petition had been filed with the court. A Savannah-Chatham publicschools spokesman said the youth was charged with awith aggravated assault, possession of a knife on school property and disrjupting public schools in the case,
One DeRenne student was sent to Memorial University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said the incident occurred in the hallway at the school about 7:30 a.m. – 15 minutes before classes were to begin.
