One person was killed and two others were hospitalized with serious injuries Saturday evening in a multi-vehicle wreck that snarled traffic between Savannah and Tybee Island for hours.
Late into the night, the Savannah-Chatham police Major Accident Investigation Team was continuing to look into the wreck that happened about 5:45 p.m. about a mile-and-a-half west of Fort Pulaski on U.S. 80, said Julian Miller, police spokesman.
One car crossed the centerline and clipped a truck towing a boat on a trailer, the car then hit another vehicle head-on, Miller said. Southside Fire/EMS firefighters extricated one victim from the wreckage. All the injured people were transported to Memorial University Medical Center.
Police Saturday night withheld the names of all the people involved in the accident pending next-of-kin notification.
U.S. 80 remained closed through about 8:30 p.m., leaving miles of backed-up traffic in both directions.
Miller said MAIT would continue its investigation into the crash.
