A single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning has killed both occupants, according to Savannah-Chatham police.

Jennifer M. McLaughlin, 30, died at Memorial University Medical Center, where she was transported after a patrol officer pulled her out of a burning car about 5:30 a.m., said police spokesman Julian Miller.

Police are still trying to identify the name and gender of the second victim, who was driving the tan Oldsmobile 88 before it crashed and erupted into flames.

According to police, the car had sped away from an officer who approached it on foot when he saw it parked at the boat ramp on Islands Expressway moments earlier. It narrowly missed a patrol car on Goebel Avenue and crashed into several trees at Foster Street, erupting into flames.

Members of the police department's Major Accident Investigation Team continue to investigate the crash.
