An attorney for a 13-year-old DeRenne Middle School student today denied allegations of the child’s guilt in a May 6 knife attack on a fellow schoolmate.
Chatham County Juvenile Court Judge LeRoy Burke III scheduled an adjudicatory hearing for May 21 in the case and rejected a defense motion that she be released from detention pending the hearing.
The judge also rejected a defense plea that he exclude a Savannah Morning News reporter from the session, but directed that the child’s name not be disclosed in coverage of the case.
The Savannah Morning News generally does not identify juveniles until a court determines them guilty of a designated felony charge.
Charges stem from a May 6 incident in which a 13-year-old female student was stabbed with a kitchen knife in a hallway at the school 15 minutes before classes were to begin.
The victim was taken to Memorial University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
