A house fire Monday evening at 4004 Worth St. displaced a family. The fire happened about 5 p.m. and did major damage to the four-bedroom vinyl clad home, said Harry Walker, American Red Cross Southeast Georgia Chapter spokesman. The homeowner, a 40-year-old senior master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force stationed locally, discovered the fire when he looked outside the kitchen door, Walker said. He saw smoke outside and took his 4- and 5-year-old sons and his wife’s father living with him outside immediately and called 911. His 33-year-old wife and 14-year-old daughter were not home at the time, and did not know of the fire until arriving home later. No one was apparently injured in the blaze, Walker said. Damage to the home was severe enough the home cannot be lived in. The home is insured and the insurance adjuster will meet with the family Tuesday to help with long term living arrangements, Walker said.
The Red Cross provided the family a hotel for one night, funds for clothing and food for a week. They also provided six comfort kits containing personal hygiene items.
