The annual treasure hunt that follows the end of Savannah College of Art and Design’s school year is set to begin.
Before departing the city for the summer break, students dump furnishings, electronics and other belongings in the lanes and sidewalks, where locals scavenge for barely used items that are often in pristine condition.
To assist in recycling, reusing and properly disposing of these items, the city of Savannah has partnered with the college, Goodwill and Keep Savannah Beautiful.
From May 31 to June 4, SCAD students can take advantage of free pickup of items such as furniture and appliances.
Residents are being asked to place such items where they normally place refuse carts. City staff will also set up in the old Sears building parking lot on Henry Street, between Bull and Drayton, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., where students can bring items for pickup. Dump trucks will make rounds from Habersham Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Henry Street to East Waldburg Street.
Goodwill will be at the site to collect reusable goods. This waste reduction effort is also a key component of Keep Savannah Beautiful participation in the Great American Cleanup, according to city officials.
