Savannah Fire & Emergency Services investigators believe arson was involved in a late Wednesday night fire in the city’s Sackville area.
Savannah firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames in the rear of the one-story, wood house at 1314 E. 59th St. when they arrived on scene just before 11:10 p.m.
Firefighters say the back porch was engulfed in flames and the fire had extended to the attic by the time they arrived. Firefighters were able to extinguish the exterior flames quickly, but the fire in the attic proved to be more elusive.
Due to the nature of structure’s construction, firefighters basically chased the flames through the attic – extinguishing the fire in one area, only to have it flare up in another part of the attic.
Firefighters were able to eventually douse the flames and contain the fire damage to attic. The living area of the house sustained extensive smoke and water damage.
The house was vacant at the time of the fire and investigators say evidence at the scene indicates a flammable liquid was used to ignite the flames on the back porch.
