Republican meet and greet
4-7 p.m. Oct. 18. Johnny Harris Restaurant, Victory Drive. There will be a republican meet and greet held Oct. 18 at Johnny Harris Restaurant. The candidates will speak at 5 p.m. and then the floor will be opened for questions. The public is invited to attend. They are also providing rides to the polls. Early voting begins Oct. 15- Nov. 2. Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run/Walk
The 2nd Annual Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run/Walk in Savannah is just around the corner. Register your team today by visiting www.jbrwsavannah.kintera.org or by calling the local office at 678-237-4444.  This community event is a great way to kick off the holiday season by doing something fun to fight the nation’s leading cause of disability. The festivities begin when registration opens at 8 a.m. at The Islands YMCA on Saturday, Nov. 17.

Savannah Children’s Choir to offer Master Class
St. Paul’s Church, 34th and Abercorn Streets. A Master Class is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s. The Master Class will provide currently-enrolled high school and college vocal majors a chance to perform for and work with a professional opera singer, who will review and critique their work. From the pool of applicants, eight singers will be selected to join the Master Class.
This Master Class opportunity is only open to currently-enrolled full-time high-school or college vocal or music majors. Application materials and instructions are available on the SCC’s website, www.savannahchoir.org. Completed applications are due Oct. 22, and singers will be notified of their selection by Wednesday, Oct. 31. Savannah Council on World Affairs presents “Understanding Muslim Societies”
7:30 p.m. Oct. 18. Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm St. The Savannah Council on World Affairs has been selected by the World
Affairs Councils of America, to host Dr. Marc Lynch, a Carnegie Scholar, presenting “Understanding Muslim Societies” as part of the Six Top Issues for US National Security Engage America Speaker Series. A series made possible by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and brings a very high level of expertise to this very complex issue. Open to the public. Free for members, students and accompanying family members, educators and active military and their dependents. $10 others.

Sierra Club to hold lecture
7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 18. First Presbyterian Church, 520 Washington Ave. Lecture by Seth R. Gunning, Regional Sierra Club Conservation Organizer for the Beyond Coal Campaign. The Sierra Club’s Georgia Beyond Coal campaign is working to ensure a healthy clean energy future by stopping new coal plant development, reducing the use of all fossil fuels, and encouraging the creation of tens of thousands of new 21st Century jobs in Georgia. SSU Homecoming Week
7 p.m. Oct. 18. Tiger Arena. On Oct. 18, Tiffany Hallback, a senior business management major from Austell, Ga., will be crowned Miss Savannah State University 2012-13 during the queen’s coronation, which is free and open to the public. Other campus queens will also be presented during the ceremony, which begins at 7 p.m. at Tiger Arena.
