Savannah-Chatham police early Wednesday morning arrested an 18-year-old suspected of stealing a car from a southside dealership and using it to flee pursuing police before crashing.
Charles Leonard Mobley was charged with theft by taking and auto, fleeing to elude, reckless driving and two counts of criminal damage to property after he was captured at his East 49th Street residence about 3 a.m.
Mobley was spotted about 2:20 a.m. driving a 2007 Mercury Mariner at excessive speed near several southside car dealerships, sad Julian Miller, police spokesman. Officers pursued the vehicle north into the Midtown and Baldwin Park neighborhoods.
In the 1400 block of East 40th Street, Mobley struck a fence and a building with the SUV that then overturned. Mobley and another male suspect fled on foot, but police followed the suspect to his nearby residence where they arrested him.
Miller said investigators are searching for the second suspect.
The Mercury was found by other officers to have been stolen from the Savannah Toyota Value Used Car Center.
