Hurling a toilet seat across a 30-foot long sand pit and ringing a metal stake is easier than knocking over empty beer cans with a duct tape-wrapped roll of toilet paper.

At least that was true for Tanner Reed and Ashley Edwards, two competitors Friday evening in the Savannah Parrot Heads Club’s Redneck Olympics at Coach’s Corner.

More than a dozen teams participated in the event that featured five bar games with a “redneck twist,” as described by Sasha Ruth, the club’s activities director.

Two-person teams participated in toilet seat horseshoes, cornhole, washers, redneck golf and beer can bowling, all in an attempt to raise money for a good cause.

“We want to raise as much money as possible and this year we are donating all the proceeds to the Islands Feral Cat Project,” Ruth said.

The Redneck Olympics seemed like a fun way to relax while on vacation and enjoy the atmosphere at the Thunderbolt watering hole, said Reed.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever done anything like this,” said the Savannah native, a soldier who is currently on leave from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where he’s stationed. “My parents are part of the Parrot Head Club, so I thought I’d check it out.”

Laughing as his partner unsuccessfully attempted a second round of beer can bowling, Reed admitted it was harder than it looks.

“Actually, it’s hard as hell,” he said. “It’s not a ball, so it doesn’t roll how you want it to; it kind of does what it wants.”
