Battle of the ages: Co-leaders Hall, 56, Geibel 18, square off in final round of Oglethorpe Invitational

As 56-year-old Jack Hall made one of his eight birdies at Wilmington Island Club on Saturday in the second round of the Oglethorpe Invitational, a spectator asked, “Was that the old guy?”

Don’t look now but the “old guy” from Sea Island is on the verge of having his name etched on the championship trophy for a third time after a 4-under-par 67 put him in a tie atop the leaderboard with 18-year-old Robert Geibel from Pembroke Pines, Fla.

Hall and Geibel are one stroke clear of 20-year-old MJ Maguire, a University of North Florida golfer who carded a 3-under 68 in the second round to get to 8 under for the tournament.

There were 14 more rounds in the 60s on Saturday and the two-round cut settled at 3-over 145. There are 40 players at even par or better, and the top 30 finishers are exempt into the 2014 field.

Hall won the Oglethorpe Invitational in 2005 and ’10, but he feels like he let one get away last year when he made a double bogey late in the final round and finished as runner-up. On Saturday, he made double bogeys on Nos. 5 and 15 but countered with eight birdies, including a tap-in from 6 inches on the 18th hole.

“I hit greens wherever I go, and you can see the greens on this course so well that you can aim for quadrants on the green and give yourself makeable putts,” said Hall, who played in the U.S. Senior Open earlier this month and won the Georgia Four-Ball Championship earlier this year with Savannah’s Danny Nelson.

“Distance control is advantageous for me here, and I guess that comes from familiarity. Last year, I tried to beat my opponent and I feel like I gave that tournament away with some bad mental golf.

“My ego golf is over, and now I’m just worried about making the lowest scores I can make,” Hall added.

Hall is three years older than Geibel’s father, and the tournament co-leader just celebrated his 18th birthday on July 21. After Hall birdied the 18th hole playing in the group in front of Geibel, the University of Louisville incoming freshman dropped his approach shot to within 10 feet and made a birdie of his own on the final hole to pull even.

“(The birdie on No. 18) was pretty important to separate myself, and knowing I’m in contention (today) really helps a lot,” said Geibel, who qualified last week for August’s U.S. Amateur Championship. “I know if I can keep it straight again, I may be able to go after some of the pins. But I also know the pins will tucked, so the game plan will be to play smart.”

The long-hitting Maguire is only a stroke back, and Georgia Southern golfer Will Evans, who finished third in the Oglethorpe last year, is two strokes back at 7 under after a 2-under 69 in the second round.

Savannah’s Doug Hanzel, a four-time Oglethorpe champion, climbed into contention with a 3-under 68 that propelled him to 4 under and a tie for seventh.

Facing a leaderboard populated by players in their teens and early 20s, Hall relishes the opportunity to outplay the young guns and will employ the same “boring golf” strategy that has made him one of Georgia’s top amateur golfers for decades. He has countless victories during his career and has enough wins after his 50th birthday that he struggled to recount them all.

“I want it just as bad as the young players do, so the desire level is the same,” Hall said. “We want to win, because if you finish second, you’re the first loser. Only one guy is going to be happy after (today’s) round and that’s the one who wins.”

Notes

The first two rounds featured two aces on Wilmington Island Club’s sixth hole. On Friday, Savannah’s Walter Hagen Jr., holed out during his first round en route to a 2-over 73, and during Saturday’s second round, Jacksonville’s Jarred Garcia holed out during his round of 72.
