Chatham County District Attorney Meg Heap has been appointed to a Georgia House working group on a proposed comprehensive reform to the state’s asset forfeiture law.
The appointment by House Speaker David Ralston puts Heap in a group that will make recommendations the House Judiciary Committee by Jan. 12. to strengthen and support the efforts of police agencies but also protect the rights of Georgia’s citizens.
In Georgia, the greatest number of asset forfeitures result from law enforcement confiscations of drug-related activities. Civil forfeitures are an extremely important tool in funding law enforcement agencies.
