The annual Back to School Expo will take place a week after school starts in the Savannah-Chatham public school system, but organizers from the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance say it will be worth the wait.
“We’re going to have a lot of games, a lot of free giveaways and a lot of kids,” said the Rev. James Nelson, of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance. “Last year we had over 5,000.”
The expo will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Savannah Civic Center, 301 W. Oglethorpe Ave.
The free public event will feature book bag and school supply giveaways, health and dental screenings and information about school programs and services. All children must be accompanied by a parent.
“This marks the fifth year of the wonderful community venture,” said Savannah-Chatham Public Schools spokesman Kurt Hetager.
