An elderly dog rescued from a drainage ditch in Effingham County Tuesday has been euthanized.
The dog was found on Oakridge Circle and removed by humane enforcement deputies.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said it appears the dog had been stuck in the drainage ditch for several days.
The dog was taken to Effingham Animal Hospital in poor condition.
“The dog was in bad shape and couldn’t walk," Ehsanipoor said.
She was euthanized Tuesday evening due to her injuries and poor condition, Ehsanipoor said.
Ehsanipoor said it is not known whether the dog wandered into the ditch or was dumped.
“If we determine there was foul play, we will prosecute whoever is responsible,” Ehsanipoor said.
The case is under investigation.
