With a searing high of 97 degrees, Monday was Savannah’s hottest day so far this year.
Heat indices hit between 105-110 degrees in the afternoon hours, said Frank Alsheimer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston, S.C.
Alsheimer said the area is in between weather systems currently and downward motion in the atmosphere combined with heavy sunshine caused Monday’s high temperatures.
The good news: “(Monday) is probably the hottest day we’ll see for a while,” Alsheimer said.
Savannah’s not out of the woods yet, though. Alsheimer said he expected today’s high to reach 96 degrees.
“Then we’ll be cooling down because we’re going to get more clouds and chances for rain starting Wednesday,” he said.
He advises residents to stay indoors if possible and, if going outside for prolonged times is necessary, to stay wary of the heat.
“Be a little more cautious,” he said. “Drink more fluids often. If you start feeling some of the signs of heat stroke like light-headedness, the inability to feel cool at all or you stop sweating, that means it’s time to get inside immediately before you suffer heat stroke.”
