An apartment fire on Savannah's southside displaced a mother and her four children early Saturday afternoon.

The family arrived about noon at their residence at 200 Hampstead Avenue and discovered it was on fire after opening the door to the apartment. The blaze did substantial damage to the home, rendering it unlivable, said American Red Cross spokesman Harry Walker.

No injuries were reported in the incident, as the mother was able to remove her children, whose ages range from 1 to 10, from danger and call the fire department.

The Red Cross has provided the family with short term housing and money to purchase shoes and clothing.

Walker said the Red Cross will do a follow up on Monday to make sure the family has a place to stay while their apartment is being repaired, which will likely take about a week.
