Port Wentworth’s mayor is running for re-election, along with two current City Council members and a political newcomer.
Mayor Glenn “Pig” Jones was joined in the P.B. Edwards Jr. Recreation Center on Monday night by incumbent City Councilmen James Curry and Judson Bowers and newcomer Roni Copeland to announce the four intend to file paperwork to run by Aug. 26.
“We had made a decision that we were going to go out and do this together and work hard together and then if we do have an opponent in the future, we would all work together for the common goal of doing what will always be best for the city of Port Wentworth,” Jones said.
Curry, 45, currently a councilman at large, works as a water and sewer technician for Chatham County, and is running to be elected to District 3.
Bowers, 64, a maintenance manager at Ports America currently representing District 3, plans to run for an at-large post.
Copeland, 50, a dental hygienist, plans to run for District 1.
“I’m interested in embracing the growth that’s coming to the area,” she said. “We all know it’s coming. With it is coming a lot of opportunity.”
Jones has been Port Wentworth’s mayor for eight years.
