The Savannah State men’s basketball team will play host to the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion Miami Hurricanes on Dec. 19 at Tiger Arena, Tigers coach Horace Broadnax said Tuesday.
It will be a homecoming of sorts for former Liberty County High star Rion Brown, a senior who averaged 6.4 points and 2.0 rebounds as one of Miami’s leading players off the bench,
The Hurricanes won the ACC regular-season title with a 15-2 conference record. They were 29-7 overall and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Marquette.
SSU was 19-15 a year ago and advanced to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament before losing to East Carolina in the first round.

Three Savannah schools appear in the Georgia Sportswriters Association high school football preseason poll released Tuesday.
In Class A, Savannah Christian is ranked No. 7 with 36 points. Calvary Day is outside the top 10 with five points.
In Class AA, Benedictine did not make the top 10 but received seven points.

Armstrong duo
named All-PBC
Armstrong Atlantic State University senior outside hitter Jessica Santaniello and junior libero Stephanie Sfara have been named to the preseason All-Peach Belt Conference volleyball squad, announced Tuesday by league officials.
Santaniello and Sfara earn two of the spots on the eight-player squad, which included six hitters/blockers plus a setter and libero. Armstrong and Flagler each sported two players on the squad.
Santaniello ranked second in the PBC in kills, sixth in total attacks and fourth in digs in 2012. She was named All-PBC and an AVCA honorable mention All-America last year.
Sfara was 12th in the PBC with 343 digs. She was also 11th in the league with 39 service aces.
Armstrong opens up the 2013 season by hosting the 2013 Pirate Volleyball Classic, presented by Optim Orthopedics, on Sept. 6-7. The Pirates face Erskine at 1 p.m. Sept. 6 in the first match of the Classic.
